Elevate Your Cooking

My friend Julie chopping vegetables from her garden.

A beautiful, hand-crafted cutting board can elevate your cooking experience. These make great gifts for a chef in your life (or yourself!).

I make (mostly) end-grain cutting boards because — compared to flat grain or edge grain — they are the most “knife friendly” and they offer the most interesting design possibilities. Each board is handmade and unique. I want them to be beautiful cutting boards that are used and enjoyed, not show pieces.

Materials

My primary concern in choosing woods and finishes is that they be food safe. Please see the Food Preparation Safety page for important information about proper hygiene to keep your wooden cutting boards safe to use.

Some of my favorite woods are maple, cherry, black walnut, oak, and pine.

I use a two-step finish — first, two applications of food-grade mineral oil, then with cutting-board wax or conditioner. These are some of the finishes I use:

  • Howard’s Cutting Board Oil and Clark’s Cutting Board Wax - or -
  • John Boos Mystery Butcher Block Oil and Board Cream

Caring For Your Cutting Board

Your cutting board was made to be used — please enjoy it! These simple instructions will help to preserve it:

Do:

  • After each use, wash with hot water and dish soap or rinse in the sink
  • Towel dry after washing and let air dry by standing on its edge
  • The FDA suggests that you consider using paper towels, or if cloth towels are used, they should be laundered frequently using a hot water cycle
  • To renew the surface, periodically wipe it with food-grade mineral oil and (optionally) wax it with a cutting-board wax

Don’t:

  • Let it soak in water
  • Wash it in the dishwasher
